Recently, many have been distracted with an attempt by the McCain-Palin campaign, the Republican Party, and the right-wing media to hoodwink the public with concocted stories of “voter fraud.” This sad and cynical campaign has been outed over the last several days by a number of responsible journalists who have recognized this coordinated attack for exactly what it is.
It has been made clear that ACORN, in running its voter registration program, where we registered 1.3 million new voters and employed 13,000 canvassers, took seriously the need for quality control and had detailed mechanisms in place, including the pro-active flagging of any potentially problematic cards, which we are required by law in virtually all states to submit to boards of elections.
The real issue here is a coordinated attempt to discourage people from voting. As a nation, our efforts should be to work together to reduce the barriers to voting for our citizens, to encourage their participation in democracy and to take a hard line against these cynical and ugly attempts to cast a shadow over what is a historical opportunity.
Recently, we have seen too many examples of attempts to reduce participation, kick people off rolls, begin the intimidation of voters, and in general disenfranchise our citizenry. This sad attempt to stomp on the excitement around this unique time in our history must not be allowed to continue. We must be vigilant about our passion for ensuring that every single American who can vote gets to vote and that no one stands in their way.
I will be there on Election Day, walking people to the polls, as will thousands from my organization and from around the country. Because there is nothing more American than walking into the voter booth and casting a ballot and we shouldn’t let anyone stand in the way.
