Another Black "Godfather"

“The Godfather,” one of the greatest movies of all time, is accessible in a different way for those of us who want to do more than watch the movie. “The Godfather” video game by EA Games takes you through the movie’s storyline as new character—a young guy whose father was murdered and who the Corleone family takes under their wing. For my brothas, a cool thing about this game is that you can edit your character’s attributes, including skin color. While I was playing the game, my character was a brown-skinned man with a fro!

The game, which takes place in New York City, starts you out as an outsider with a business-like relationship to the Corleone family. As the game goes on, however, and you complete missions and your notoriety grows, so does your relationship with the family. You are promoted to a series of titles until you are a “made man” in the Corleone family. From there, you begin to rise in power until you reach your goal and become “King of New York City.”

The controls allow you to freely roam the city while completing missions, fulfilling hit contracts, extorting businesses and fighting rival families. The graphics are excellent and very authentic, with the clothes, cars, buildings and people of New York in the 1950’s. The game illustrates actual streets and highways so if you are familiar with New York, you will have an advantage navigating the huge landscape. The fighting aspect of this game is great. There are a wide range of weapons that you can buy all over the city and, once you get familiar with the controls, it’s pretty easy to use them. The free roaming aspect of this game really makes you feel like you’re “there” and in control, unlike a lot of other video games which don’t give you any ability to explore or breathing room as they guide you too strictly through different levels.

I have a few problems with this game. One is that if you aren’t familiar with New York, then you’ll find yourself constantly heading to the start menu to look at the map. I think an arrow-guided GPS system could have been used. While such a system would not be authentic for the time era covered, it would be practical and make the game-playing smoother. Another problem is how often you get stuck reloading in the middle of gunfire. It is really important to upgrade your skills on this game, especially when it comes to gunfights, because if you don’t it will take you forever to reload. In this game you have the ability to drive and steal cars but it is sometimes too difficult to drive. It seems like on every block you find yourself running into somebody or crashing into other cars.

Even with these faults this game is definitely much better than average and I’d highly recommend it to lovers of “The Godfather” and lovers of shooting games.

”The Godfather” game for Xbox is rated M for blood, violence, language and suggestive themes.
