SeeingBlack.com, based in Washington, DC, has developed an international reputation for news and cutting-edge reviews of arts, media and politics for a new generation of reader and thinkers.
Writing about us, MSNBC.com said, "Big words. Big thoughts. Big-hearted site." Black Issues Book Review said that we are "refreshingly different from the countless web loggers lurking on the Internet." Tavis Smiley described us as "dedicated to the dissemination of reviews and news from a Black perspective." In October 2006, we were named a finalist in the Online Journalism Awards sponsored by the Annenberg School of Communication and the University of Southern California
We have persisted in bringing diverse and progressive Black voices at a time when corporate media offers a narrowing of information and viewpoints. As our world has become a place more hostile to people of color around the world, we have become even more convinced that we must have a free territory for voice and that we must, as a wise elder once said, "write ourselves into existence."
With insightful reviews, as well as in-depth features and commentary, SeeingBlack.com offers a fresh and uncensored Black perspectives on film, television, politics, media, music, literature, sports, spirituality, health, visual arts, theater, dance, the diaspora, family and news.
Important to SeeingBlack.com are listings for events around the country and links to other sites. We would like to create a community and network with progressive organizations around the country. Regular features include "The 411" with news of importance to Blacks in the U.S. and the African diaspora. "Talkback Radio," a web version of urban talk radio, offers a space for readers to sound off on the topics of the day.
The site, launched in April 2001 in honor of the birthday of Paul Robeson, was founded and is edited by Esther Iverem, a journalist, cultural critic and poet. Before becoming an independent communicator in 1998, Iverem worked as a cultural writer and critic for The Washington Postand New York Newsday. She has also worked at ESSENCE magazine and the New York Times.
Other contributors include Mark Anthony Neal, Robin D.G. Kelley, Karen Juanita Carrillo, Makani Themba-Nixon, Harry Amana, Astride Charles, Sidik Fofana and a host of other strong voices. (meet our contributors). We also welcome your voice! SeeingBlack.com is a project of Seeing Black, dedicated to the distribution of reviews and news—from a Black perspective—about African Americans and the African diaspora.
We welcome you to our family and invite you to raise your voice!
