The NFL’s Best--And Not

Shawne Merriman
The T.O. sideshow is finished, Donovan is out for the season and Shawn Alexander is back. Half the NFL season is over and it’s time for a report on the best and the disappointing so far. Here’s my POV for the mid-term:

Best Coach: Tony Dungy hands down. When you have back-to-back, 8-0 seasons at the mid-way point, that’s coaching. Honorable mention, Sean Payton down in New Orleans.

Disappointing Coach: Joe Gibbs. That’s right—Joe Gibbs. Gibbs brought in an offensive “genius” in Al Saunders, went out and spent a whole lot of money for instant offense and, instead, got instant pudding—the vanilla version.

Best Offensive Player: LaDainian Tomlinson. Barring injury, he’s on pace to break the single season touchdown record.

Disappointing Offensive Player: Edgerrin James. He left the Colts for greener pastures and the way he’s been playing, he should be put out to pasture.

Best Defensive Player: Shawne Merriman. Even though he was suspended for four games for testing positive for a banned substance, brother-man was on a serious roll.

Best Rookie: Marques Colston. The rookie wide receiver for the Saints is tied for first with seven touchdown passes.

Disappointing Rookie: Reggie Bush. Also on the same Saints team as Colston, he has not lived up to the hype.

MVP: Peyton Manning. Just too damn good.

Monday Night Football on ESPN: I would be remiss if I didn’t give MNF crew a mid-season report. Grade B+. The booth of Mike Tirico, Joe Theismann and Tony Kronheiser has proven to be wonderful blend of wit, football analysis, and humor.

And that’s my POV…
